Here's the showcase of my work :)
What am I supposed to do ?
Our requirements for the project :
- select 6 pictures of interior architecture
- find the points and connect with lines for each picture
- pick one of the six to further develop
- building models, exploring planes and voids
- at least 2 mock up models
- 1 final model
- Dateline : Week 5 ( Monday 23/9 )
Progress
The first task was based on our interest, we select 6 interior architecture pictures. As you can see, my favorite styles are industrial and midcentury modern. 6 of the pictures are revolving around those styles. Connecting points with lines may seem easy, but it took me about a week to complete it.
I got bored as I was connecting dots and lines, and realised the longer I stare at my work, the more it looks like characters or animals I have seen. For example, dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, a wild fox, penguins, characters from Thomas The Train, etc. (( imaginations kicks in ))
I selected one of the pictures and pasted it on a foam board. It is my first time making a model so I had no idea how to kick start this project. It took me a week to figure out the how to use the tools ( plier, cutter, art blade, bamboo sticks, etc. ), which really delayed my progress.
The first mock up was TERRIBLE. The spaces were awkward and patchy. The first mockup was me just trying to play around with the bamboo sticks and the planes. It was a total disaster, but after getting feedback from Mr Paul, I did my research so I can improve more on my next mock up.
After doing a few researches and observing samples or models in Pinterest, I had a few rough ideas, therefore, I decided to test it out on my second mockup. I can say that this has definitely, improved a ton compared to the previous mockup model. Certainly, it has some improvements to be made to this model, which was making the support structure less complicated.
Later on, I got inspired by jumping dolphins over the waves. I thought that I could use some design principles that I have just picked up from the lectures. I decided to imply EMPHASIS and MOVEMENT into my model.
After testing it out, I realised that what I built look nothing like a dolphin. It looks like a bird or flamingo, which kinda upsets me. Later on, I got my feedback and learnt that I shall not be so obsessed with the form of dolphin as it limits myself and the viewers' imaginations when they look at my model.
This is my final product - The Baffling Mind. This time, I did not intend to create anything based on any image or object. Reason why I named this model the 'Baffling Mind' was because this assignment was my first time building a model. Throughout the process, I always get confused and lost. It was hard for me to understand what makes an interesting space and how to create one good model.
Reflection
I am certain that I have acquired so many new information and techniques through this assignment. Despite having to go through so many confusions, I finally learnt how to use tools properly and techniques on how to get it done. This is definitely a skill that I need to master before going into the outside world and I am pleased to be able to learn this through this first assignment.
As this is my first time making models, I have most certainly faced through many challenges during the process. For instance, how to get the bamboo sticks get together without falling apart, how to stick planes without leaving a gap as well as making sure your whole model does not topple. These are the examples of what I have consistently faced throughout, and each time I had to come out with a solution to solve the issues. After this assignment, I have gained this knowledge and will make sure that I will not make the same mistakes as I did before.
Initially, the due date of this assignment was in week 4. Luckily, the due date was extended by a few days to week 5. I am VERY SUPER grateful for the extensions, or else I would not have completed this assignment. Week 1 - I was completely new to the module; Week 2 - I got the brief of this assignment; Week 3 - I started working on the model and obviously FAILED many times, then here comes Week 4. Throughout this cramped schedule, I have learnt to arrange my time properly, balancing my assignments and work ( teaching ). Throughout, I have constantly pushed myself to complete it without giving up.
